As an alumnus of University of Illinois, I applaud the courageousness of the editor of the Daily Illini who chose to print the cartoons of Muhammed. It is unbelievable to think that in 2006 we are living in a time where believers of freedom are afraid to speak their minds and poke fun at people and icons. Our forefathers shed blood so that the rest of us could enjoy our freedoms, free speech being amongst the most precious.

We poke fun at presidents, popes, rabbis and clergy all the time and nobody blinks an eye, but make fun of Mohammed and some of his followers are ready to murder you.

It’s high time followers of Islam start respecting the right to free speech. Islam’s extremists would murder you for poking fun at their dead leader. History has shown us that this kind of extremism and intolerance will only lead to their demise (e.g. Hitler, Stalin, et al.).

Shame on the NY Times, Washington Post, CNN and their ilk for abandoning free speech in exchange for security.

Ben Franklin said it best, “The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either.”
